Easy DIY Room Spray with Essential Oils

Many everyday household products are full of chemicals that negatively impact our health (IYDKNYK). Even seemingly “clean” or “eco-friendly” brands utilize clever marketing to mislead you into believing their products are safe.

The US federal government has limited regulation / safety testing requirements for air fresheners. When I first became aware of the lack of regulation for many of the products I was using on a daily basis, I was shocked. Like many, I used to believe that if it was on the shelf, it was safe. I quickly learned this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Air fresheners are a known source of  VOC’s- volatile organic compounds.

With so little industry regulation, how do you know what’s safe and what’s not?- a question many are asking recently. There’s really only two ways- the first is to get into the habit of reading ingredient labels. It’s absolutely essential and a non-negociable. Another way is to swap out products with DIY’s.

It’s important to reduce your toxic load however you can. In this blog, I share how you can easily create your own low-tox air freshener using a few ingredients.

The Power of Essential Oils

Essential oils are the life-blood of the plant (the most important part). What our blood is to us, is what essential oils do for plants. They carry nutrients and oxygen, while also effectively combating the damaging effects of toxins, impurities, and harmful substances.

Essential oils have been used by humans for thousands of years and are known to provide support for every system in the body. They’re used extensively for hormonal and emotional support. An oil can soothe a child to sleep at night or provide a calming effect after a stressful day at work. Oils an also be used as an alternative for toxic cleaning chemicals in our home.

Why Low Tox DIYS are Important

Our bodies face exposure to far more toxins on a daily basis than we’re able to process. As a result, many suffer from unexplainable symptoms. Reducing our toxin load whenever possible is essential for overall wellness. DIY’s like this one make it easy and cost-effective to go low tox.

Why Young Living

Unfortunately, the essential oil industry is also highly unregulated. The law doesn’t require FDA approval for oils, which means you could be buying… well anything. Not all essential oils are created equally. Companies can claim to be “organic” and “pure” without ever having to prove a thing. They add fillers that dilute the oil so much that the therapeutic benefits are no longer present. Some even contain synthetic fragrances.

I researched different companies, looking into their practices, and found most had little to no regulation over their farms. Only one company seemed to align with my standards- Young Living, a Utah-based company mastering the art of creating essential oils for over 30 years. They have a seed to seal commitment that ensures the highest quality essential oil possible. Their distilling process is unmatched, they have third-party testing, and the best part is not a single pesticide is ever used in the process (they have an even higher standard than USDA Organic Certification).

*Here at Be Well, I’m extremely selective about mentioning companies/brands in this space. You will only find recommendations for the products/services that I swear by, love and use personally.
